Is Getting a Tummy Tuck Something You Should Think About?

There are many women who are interested in having a firmer midsection. So, they start eating healthier and exercising profusely. In earlier times, women would hide a problematic midsection behind a corset. However, corsets were painful and restricting. Now, women have more choices than ever before as to what they can do about their midsection.

An option that some women might decide to have is a tummy tuck. In order to seriously begin considering getting such a procedure, it is important that women have a better understanding as to who makes an ideal tummy tuck candidate. The right candidate for a tummy tuck will, most importantly, be a woman who is already at a healthy weight for her body frame. This procedure does include a bit of fat reduction, but it is mainly meant to tighten loose skin and muscles, especially on a woman who has had a couple of children.

When a woman has decided that she might indeed be a successful candidate for this procedure, then it is important that she take the next step in finding the right plastic surgeon to perform the procedure. This should be a surgeon who has had at least five years of training in surgery, with two of those years specifically being in plastic surgery. The surgeon should also be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Some women think that once they have a tummy tuck, then they can stop exercising and eating healthy. This is not true, because while the results of the procedure are indeed meant to be permanent, they can also be impaired by significant changes in weight. Additionally, if a woman has plans on getting pregnant again, she should not have a tummy tuck until she knows that she will not be having any more children.

Once the right surgeon has been selected, the next step is to schedule a consultation with the surgeon. This is an appointment where the woman will be evaluated as to the successfulness of her candidacy. She will also be asked various questions about her medical background and her lifestyle habits. The consultation is also a time for the patient to ask the doctor any additional questions that she might have.

The tummy tuck procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia, and an incision will be made at the base of the torso. The surgeon will then go about tightening the abdominal muscles and the skin, as well as getting rid of excess amounts of skin tissue and fat. The incision will then be closed.

Results will not be immediately seen because of the swelling that will occur (which is a natural part of the healing process). Rather, the results will be seen gradually, and will start being seen a few days after the procedure. Immediately after the procedure, the treated area will be bandaged up, and the patient (if she has elected to have it as an outpatient procedure) will need to pay special attention to the area, making sure that it is clean at all times.
