Should a Tummy Tuck Be in Your Future?

If you were to ask a group of women what one thing is about their physique that they would like to have changed, chances are that many of them would like to have a slimmer torso, particularly their stomach. The female body has a tendency to store fat in the midsection in anticipation for pregnancy.

It is the after effects of pregnancy that usually has a woman considering getting a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure in which minimally invasive incisions are made in the abdominal area (by the way, this procedure is also known as an abdominoplasty). The surgeon then goes in and tightens the muscles and loose skin in the midsection, while at the same time getting rid of excess fat.

When a woman has had more than one pregnancy (especially if she was ever pregnant with multiples) her muscles and skin have to stretch beyond their capacity in order to accommodate the growing fetuses. Usually, women are able to regain their body after their first pregnancy, but it gets harder with each successive one.

Take, for example, the situation of TLC television personality Kate Gosselin, who first had twins and then sextuplets. Obviously, having sextuplets was not the easiest thing for her body, and although she remained trim, her midsection was all loose skin and loose muscles. However, she eventually got a tummy tuck to correct this.

Although women who have had multiple pregnancies are considered excellent candidates for this procedure, women who are at a healthy weight aside from their sagging midsection, and have realistic expectations (meaning they do not expect to be perfect) are also considered good candidates for this procedure. Conversely, women who are very overweight will not be considered the right candidates, and will be instructed to go on a diet and exercise plan first.

It is important to note that there is a significant difference between getting liposuction and having this procedure done. That is because in this procedure, the emphasis is placed on tightening the muscles and sagging skin. Liposuction is only used to remove visibly excess amounts of fat.

Those women who are interested in having a tummy tuck need to begin the process by finding the right plastic surgeon. There are three main things that the right surgeon should have. First of all, he or she should be fully certified, with a specialization in just this kind of procedure. Secondly, he or she should have an extensive photographic portfolio of before and after photos of clients that have had this procedure done by them. Thirdly, the surgeon should have many excellent, verifiable client testimonials.

When the woman has found the right surgeon, it is then time to schedule a consultation to prepare for the surgery itself. This is an appointment where the surgeon will evaluate the torso, make notes as to how he or she will perform the abdominoplasty, and share those notes with the patient. The surgeon will also ask the patient questions about her medical history. Something that the patient should keep in mind is the fact that if she wants to get pregnant again, she should hold off on having this procedure done.
